    The song that touches my heart is by Faith Hill and it is called “It Matters to me” it is of the country genre. The song is about how men and women communicate and the pain that it can cause deep in your heart. I am currently in a relationship that has or was assaulted on many levels from infidelity to addiction. This song has a very special place in my heart because my partner and I have stayed the course of our love and fought to keep together a loving union that we had never experienced before...

    We were both married to other people and experienced very different types of dysfunction in our previous situations. In our relationship I believe we found in each other a new way to experience love from another person. Though our love that was assaulted many times. We have discovered through many sad and troubled times even a long separation that love can conquer all things and through learning to communicate and loving each other unconditionally we have and are building a union that cannot be broken again.

         In the song she says “Where did you learn to fight with no words” explains how men can withhold and not show their feelings. This is a common problem I had and silence can be more hurtful than words when someone is so in love that they cannot break through the walls that created when hurtful things happen that are not always deliberate or even when they are such as infidelity. Sometimes people do things because of their behavior or fear of being hurt. In my experience the other relationships were an escape from allowing me to be truly loved.

        I had never met someone as outgoing and dynamic as my girlfriend was and instead of embracing what I now know was a true love that makes me a better person. I could not trust that this relationship was going to be what it has become .In another part of the song he sings “Maybe I still don’t understand ,The distance between a woman and a man, So tell me how far it is and how you can love like this, “Cause I’m not sure I can” has helped me to see that talking and sharing your feelings and emotions with one another truly is the way to build a lasting union between two people who obviously care enough about each other .

       Country music has always been close to my heart. I remember listening to it as a child while my mom would sing outloud and dance around the house then I thought she was embarrassing.

        Now I can see how the feelings of joy and emotion this genre of music really do touch your heart and through maturity and experience I to have danced in my kitchen and cried to lyrics that can truly move a persons soul if they are open to it.In conclusion my heart belongs to country music with all of the sadness and joy and yes even heartache I have experienced throughout the years of my life country music seems to explain it best and I think Faith Hill has also helped me learn to be a better friend ,lover ,son and father…

         Out of class Essay #1

    I feel that my identity was derived from my heritage. Being Irish was about pride and hard work. I remember my grandfather taking time to tell my stories about Traveling from Ireland to the U.S.A.The hardships that were endured and the loss of life and property looking for the opportunities that were promised for immigrants’ is the United States of America.The destination was New York City and the promise was unlimited success based on your efforts not your history.

  I learned to be an honest person through the living example of my father and my mother. I learned that working hard is the best way to find and live the life you want to. Traditionally women in our family have worked to support the household as well as teach daughters and sons  how to take care of house chores that would normally be done exclusively by women as mentioned in the story “Where I Come From is Like “written by Paula Gunn Allen the author states that women were often the hardest working people in the tribe. As well as the children who worked right alongside the women.

  Furthermore when I was about thirteen years old my parents got divorced and my mother took over both roles in my life. I Learned a great deal from her through her living example of doing whatever it took to provide for my brothers and I. She finally remarried a good and honest man who was good to all of us. My lesson from her was that it truly was better to come from a broken home than to live in one. She showed me that where there is a will surely is a way if you’re willing to have faith and work hard.

   In my family traditions are very important as well as our Catholic faith has for most of my life allowed me to see people through the eyes of God.Kindness is the best way to beat an enemy as well as being a good and decent human being.

  My family is the most important thing in my life and I always strive to help when I can or just try to be there if they need me. Being a father, a son and a brother have given me some of the proudest moments in my life.

  I will never forget the sweet Irish accent my grandmother had when she would call me down for breakfast during the two week vacation she would take off from work each year. She would  have my two brothers and I and my two cousins stay with her and my grandfather. She would spoil us while my grandfather would make us dig holes and relandscape his property every year.

  Knowing that I have a rich full history of hard working and faithful  people who are not afraid to stand up for themselves and be willing to exchange  blood sweat and tears to have an opportunity to get and pursue their dreams desires and goals personally makes me very proud and grateful for the man I am today.

Difference between Paula Gunn Allen and other Womens Viewpoints

   In the story "Where I Come From Is Like This" the author Paula Gunn Allen's view of women was very different than that of the Anglo women of her time.She views women from her particular ethnicity where women were viewed as people of power and authority and hard workers.She discussed in particular the subject of menstruation.Her viewpoint is an example of native American women and their ability to actually influence men and strength that they were empowered with unlike their Anglo sisters who were seen as weak and sometimes were treated like subservient peons.Paula Gunn Allen was not raised to believe such things her family worked hard and women were responsible for labor intensive daily chores that were empowering and gave them what I understood to be respect in their communities.Within the Anglo communities women literally received little or no recognition for bearing children and keeping a house in order,raising children,or any other things they were responsible for or to. Paula Allen Gunn truly made me see that the traditions of her people were much more respectful and clearly a better view of women and the place of respect that all women deserve. My experience is that women are to be treated with love and kindness.Though I believe respect  is earned and not given  between men .Women deserve to be respected for who they are and what they actually represent which is actually the makers of men.Without the caring and gentleness of a woman I am quite sure men would not learn to have compassion and empathy for other people.My personal view is more of an equal and interdependent type view whereas the energy of both sexes can create unity and equality through mutually respecting each others schema.I enjoyed this story and hope that as our society continues to grow and change people will ultimately be viewed for their individual ability rather their sex and jaded views of our countries colonial past.               

             

Reflection of what I have learned about Reconstruction

During this part of this course I have learned that the U.S. government was very disorganized and many of the government officials could not agree on what policies were to be implemented.The  rights of the freedmen were not the main focus of reconstruction. The freed slaves were discriminated against and impoverished as a result of laws that were passed especially by the Southern states they truly did not support equality of black men and did nothing to protect their Civil Rights as American Citizens. It was a sad example of equality and a poor example of what our country stands for. The persecution of anyone under the laws our forefathers had in mind was not shown in the Reconstruction era of the late 1800's.My understanding of what actually happened is that our countrymen failed to uphold the rights of the newly freedmen and also the many white people who tried to stand in unity with the blacks hoping that they could change the way our society viewed them as people and as Americans.Though the end result was new laws being passed to protect all citizens under law the violence that led up to these changes will forever be a mark on our society that for many years to come would prove that equality among men of any race can and will be defended throughh peaceful Resistance. The bloodshed between Americans was truly a waste of human life and I believe it could have been avoided if the Executive  branch of our government would have been more instrumental in forcing the Southern state governments to support the emancipation of the slaves.It was a hard road to change the belief systems of the South and though it was a hard fought battle the end result was an equal view of all people under the Constitution so the end result was positive but the sacrifices were too many I am glad that the pursuit of liberty,justice,and the pursuit of happiness was preserved for me and all others through this terrible time in our country

Revision of group paragraph

In the third part of the story Bierce describes Peytons fall from the bridge and his supposed escape from the union soldiers was a dream.The point in which we suspected the story to be a dream was when he found a road which led him in what he percieved to be the right direction. The language suggests that the escape is not happening based on the fact or suggestion that the roads were untraveled and that there appeared to be no signs of life. we believe the verb tense is that of the present

Definition of two terms

Radical Reconstruction: The Reconstruction Acts of 1867 divided the southinto five military districts.They required the states to guarantee black male suffrage and to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment as a condition of  their readmission to the Union

Black Codes: Laws passed by Southern states immediately after the Civil War in an effort to maintain the prewar social order. The codes attempted to tie freedmen to fieldwork and prevent them from becoming equal to the white Southerners.

Open Letter to President Mckinley

In an "Open letter to President McKinley"the colored people of Massachusetts were trying to address the massive outbreaks of violence against the blacks in the south. The issues the raise are the specific times and places that black people were trying to gather and protest the rights that were being violated and the violence that occurred and the total disregard of rights as citizens of the United States as written in the Constitution.The murders and racial unrest was caused by the state governments passing laws that prevented black people from living free as they were granted through the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments of the Constitution.Personally I believe that if the northern troops would have kept a military presence in the south and not allowed southern politicians to take office unless they seceded from the Union as did President Johnson who himself was a southern Democrat from Tennessee and a former slave owner would have prevented the state level politicians from creating laws such as the "Black Codes" causing all freedmen to live under oppressive laws that were not unlike slavery.The laws created by racist southern lawmakers only sought to take the freedom given to them by the "Emancipation Proclamation" and reduce them to second class citizens and make their lives a living hell subject to violence at the hands of violent white racists.I see the conditions of living that were forced on these people to be awful and unjust the only way it would have been different would be to have continued to keep the south under "Soldier Rule" which also meant "Martial Law". This would have resulted in a more peaceful and better living situation for all races and enforced the new way of living that the Civil War was fought for and many people's lives could have been saved.

Metacognitive Reflection of my Reading habits

  I tend to read alot during the evening. I find myself reading short stories and novels. My passion in my life is about my children. I am a very introspective person.All of my life I have been drawn to working with other people. I try to read in the morning when I arise to fill my mind with positive thoughts about the path I am on and give myself a better perspective of what it is I want to accomplish each day. My goal in reading is to expand my mind and my perspective to allow new ideas to help me to create a better life for myself and my children.Keeping my mind alert through reading lots of different topics and authors definitely allows me to broaden the way I see this world that we live in. I have created a life today that through reading I am able to find the self confidence to return to school and try to regain the self confidence to become a better man and an example to my children.I read voraciously and try to fuel my mind with many ideas and thought process's that hopefully I can utilize to give my kids a better view of our society. I once held beliefs that were engrained by my father that as I grew older I found were quite distorted and even a little racist. My belief that people who are judgemental are usually ignorant and uneducated.I believe through reading I have,can,and will be the man I believe God wants me to be and if I just try everyday I will find first my own personal truth and then my purpose in the life I am living today.I am a good reader because when I was young my mother spent alot of time reading to me and through that time that she took out of her day I found that I eventually  learned to read and see the intrinsic value in spending that time with children.Which is why I participate in a program at the youth center where I live in south county helping young people learn to read.I want to show them that reading everyday can help to create a better future

The Bridge at Owl Creek Group paragraph

    In the third part of the story written by Ambrose Bierce the author describes Peyton Farquahar's fall from the bridge and his supposed escape from the federal soldiers was actually a dream.The point at which we suspected the story to be a dream was represented when he found a road which led home in the right direction.The language suggests to us that the escape was not real because there were no signs of life. That was suggested  when the author stated there were no signs of life.We as a group identified that the verb tense was present tense. Specifically when he reached for his wife and felt a stunning blow on the back of his neck and when  a person feels something it is clearly the present.

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Journal week two) )

1. My scene I will choose will be scene 2,   I believe the author wrote this to show the reader which side of the Civil War he was loyal to.It contributes to the story is such a way that I felt his longing to be a part of the Confederacy.He truly wanted to feel like a soldier might through battle.the whole larger than life of the soldier.Peyton Farquhar also desired the opportunity for distinction.This scene contributes to the meaning of the story specifically to represent how and why he arrived in this situation of being hanged.

  My prediction is that a Confederate soldier is going to be executed for being a traitor.The difference between my prediction and what actually happens is,Peyton Farquhar was a loyal southern gentlemen. Who was desperately acting on the South's behalf as a civilian spy.To gain some notoriety or accomplishment for the South through this action.The story makes it clear to the reader that the war was still going on.Even though the North and South were still fighting.The feelings were that of hatred and distrust.They each were desperately clinging to their beliefs and were brutally defending them.

  that The historical context of this story is about how Americans beliefs about slavery could divide them in such a deep way they they were willing to die for it.As much as we Americans today don't live in quite a racially divided society.There are still a myriad of issues facing minorities today.I can easily understand , Peyton's need to feel apart of the Southern cause and even though he lost his life. He knew that the consequences could or would be dire if he was captured. Obviously his own personal fear of death or capture overrides his deep desire to be glorified by his actions.

    What was going on in America when this was written was civil unrest and racism.Fear of being equal to the backs was a problem for southerners and they obviously they could not become equal to the people they once viewed as possessions. To me it seems a real tragedy that racism actually existed to the point of slavery. Furthermore my own personal view is that we are all equal and we should embrace our diversity as well as our similarities. To me it is God who will judge us in our final days not each other.

  In closing I can understand clearly Peyton's need and desire to contribute to the cause of his Southern brothers and sisters cause. Not withstanding the fact that I find the situayion morrally wrong.I believe we all have that part of us that wants to be and become more than we are.But at what cost are we as a people willing to sacrifice our own lives to be a part of a whole belief system we are trying to defend.

Civil war

         The Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865.Abraham Lincoln was the President.When  Lincoln became president he was a known opponent of slavery.The South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention to remove their state from the Union known as the United States of America.The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states-- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- and the threat of secession by four more -- Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.
   
  At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the United States Constitution, but with greater stress on the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.
General Lee's troops were soon surrounded, and on April 7, Grant called upon Lee to surrender. On April 9, the two commanders met at Appomattox Courthouse, and agreed on the terms of surrender. Lee's men were sent home on parole -- soldiers with their horses, and officers with their side arms. All other equipment was surrendered

    The Civil War was said to be one of the bloodiest wars ever fought.the union soldiers won the war and the slaves were freed.Unfortunately Lincoln was assassinated.
Then Radical Reconstruction began creating alot of chaotic legislation and unnecessary bloodshed between blacks and southern whites. (Richard E.Morris,American Encyclopedia of American History)

Amendments

The thirteenth amendment states that niether slavery ir involuntary servitude.Shall exist in the United States except when a citizen is duly convicted .Or anywhere the U.S. has juristiction.
The fourteenth amendment states that all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. and any state they reside.No state shall make or enforce any law that will abridge the priviledges or immunities of its citizens of the U.S. Nor shall any state deprive any person of  life liberty,or property,without due process of law,nor deny any person within its juristiction the equal protection of the law.It also states that you must be twenty one years old to be able to vote.It also states you cannot be elected to a government if  have been a part of a rebellion against the U.S.
IF you were congress ca removesuch a disability thruogh a vote of two-thirds of each house.Congress shall have the power to enforce, appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
The fifteenth amendment states the right to vote shall not be denied or abridged to any citizen on account of race ,color,or previous condition of servitude.The Congress shall have the right to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.(Robert A. Divine et al.,America Past and Present A-12)

           I am Casey Riland. I am 43 years old and returning to school for the first time in twenty years.I have spent most of my life working.I was in sales and I have owned two business's.I am a father of two boys ages eleven and sixteen.I am a good father and my children mean the world to me.I was married for 12 years.Now I am divorced peacefully.I have had some life changing things happen to me in the last two years.It made me take a hard look at who I am as a man and a father.
        My goal is to utilize my experiences to help other people.I have come to realize that I am not or rather was not living the life I truly wanted to.Getting an education is important to me for many reasons.I want to work in the field of phsycology. Social work I believe will give me the opportunity to give back to society in a way that will fulfill my need to help other people.
    I enjoy riding my motorcycle and i read voraciously.My life is all about my kids, They mean everything to me.I am hoping to set an example in getting my degree simultaneously creating a career path that I have always wanted.I hope to become more than I have allowed myself to be through this experience.
